ExpressCard, first known as NvuCard, is an adapter to link many peripheral devices with your personal computer, usually a desktop computer. The ExpressCard technological standard defines the layout of serial card slots and the various types of external expansion cards to plug in the available slots. The cards are capable of carrying more than one data source and can carry either formatted or unformatted data.

An ExpressCard is different from other USB devices, because it has built-in drivers for many popular computer programs. In particular, it has been designed to be compatible with Microsoft Windows, but has also been tested with Linux, Solaris, AIX, OpenVZ, Motorola, SunOS and other operating systems. This means that you can use the card with almost any operating system. The most notable feature of the ExpressCard is that the data can be printed in either binary or hex formats, both of which can be read and written by software applications.

One of the most common uses for an express card is for power management. The slot is equipped with four independent power management chips. When these chips detect that a device is using too much power (more than 500 watts), they will automatically turn off the device and save power until the power need is satisfied again. The power management chips are also located at the front edge of the card. To protect these chips, the ExpressCard includes a magnetic power pickup that keeps them from being damaged if the card is dropped. Some cards even include an indicator LED to indicate when the power management chips have been activated.

There are three types of ExpressCard slots: ExpressCard slot 1, ExpressCard slot 2, and ExpressCard slot 3. Slot 1, which began shipping in early 1997, was the first of its kind and supported only Windows. Because of the low cost of production, this card enabled companies to reduce the costs of purchasing and maintaining an entire system, which allowed them to provide the lowest possible prices to their customers. The ExpressCard slot is located directly into a USB port. Due to the lack of any sort of hardware or software for data retrieval or security, this ExpressCard slot is not compatible with any type of secure server applications.

Slot 2, which began shipping in late 1997, uses a compliant extension for USB cards. This extension allows the ExpressCard to be used with computers that are using older versions of the USB driver. The USB card slot is compatible with computers that are using Windows CE, Pocket PC, Novell, Linux, and other operating systems. A new feature of the ExpressCard slot is that it can support the Secure Digital Card (SD) format, which has better compatibility with the majority of electronic devices than the older compressed file formats.

The third slot on the ExpressCard is called PCMCIA card. The PCMCIA (PMA) card is manufactured by several different manufacturers, including Creative Labs, Quicksilver, and SanDisk. The PCMCIA is a U.S. standardized form of the Universal Serial Bus (USB) card. The ExpressCard utilizes a 32-bit PCM code to communicate with a computer. PCMCIA cards use the standard PCM encoding scheme to allow a minimum amount of data and voice communications. The PCM code can not be changed and is stored on the chip at the beginning of the card.

The four additional slots on the express card include memory slots, modularity slots, and security slots. Memory slots can be accessed through software or through the physical USB interface. Modularity slots are used for different types of devices that use specific serial buses, such as digital cameras, printers, and keyboards. Security slots control the PCM codes, among other things. In essence, the security features of a typical PCI express card can be applied to these additional slots to create a standard that can be used with a variety of devices.

Express card slots are very common in laptop computers, especially those that connect to the USB port. When a USB port is present on a laptop computer, the manufacturer places the card slot on the bottom or side of the laptop, depending on the model, and then installs the USB cable into the slot. Through this adapter, the laptop can communicate with any external source, even though the actual card is not present. As you can see, the Express card slot serves many different purposes and has started shipping systems that are designed specifically for desktop computers.
